What's up guys! So I finally got a mix together, recorded, and uploaded. Took me a lot longer than I thought, I've been pretty lazy lately ;x

This mix is a collection of progressive, vocal and uplifting trance. I welcome any criticisms you guys may have, this is my first mix so some of the transitions I think are pretty smooth while others could definitely be better, but I like to call those 'dirty transitions' xD! But in all honesty I know there are several things that I can improve upon, so feel free to give your feedback, I'd appreciate it!

You can stream the mix from the site by clicking mp3, download by right clicking - save target as on mp3, or stream from the site www.letsmix.com (I'm not sure how long it takes for the site to actually render the mix but it's going).

Hey man,

I had a listen to this yesterday, what a cool mix. It's gone into my collection.

What I did was listen to it as I would any other mix I download, i.e. just listen to the tracks and embark on the journey. And what a journey it was, as far as the progression of the tracks goes, spot on.

What I need to do next is listen to it more closely and analyze the transitions technically. I'll do that at some point later in the week. Out of interest, what is your technique to performing the transitions between the tracks? For example, going into Airbases' Medusa, what were the steps?

Good work for a 1st mix mate, be proud. Get yourself onto soundcloud too so people can comment at the transition points and the parts of the mix they think are great or could do with improvement.

For most of the tracks, I'd either do a really quick bass switch or a gradual one. Going into Medusa, I did the following:

- find that spot in both tracks where I could start playing Medusa and the end of a phrase of We Belong landed at the same point as the start of that main phrase of Medusa
- start playing Medusa when that point hit, with the low EQ all the way off on Medusa and all the way on for We Belong
- slowly bring up the volume as smooth as possible, getting it to full before the end of the phrase
- do an immediate switch on the low EQ right as that point at the start of the main phrase of Medusa hit - this varies per song of course, if there is no break in the baseline then I try to do it right at that moment where the new phrase begins, but if there's a point where there's is no base for a second then of course that's a perfect time to do it as well. The latter is more how it was done from Medusa to She Moves, and it was also much more gradual, over the period of a few seconds instead of instantly
- move the mid and high crossfades over to Medusa gradually after the bass switch, and then slowly kill off the volume. It gives the previous track a much better fade out, vs. instantly killing off the previous track, which is what I hear lots of people do nowadays. Not saying it can't work, but I hear people do it when it doesn't necessarily work.

The transition of tracks 7-8 is just awful the more I listen to it, I don't know what I was thinking...I tried different methods to get a smooth transition, although none of them sounded amazing, this definitely wasn't the best one, I don't know why I picked it >_>

I appreciate the kind words and I'll def check out soundcloud! I have my mix posted Let's Mix, they have a monthly contest as well with a prize this month of 2 CDJ-2000 and 5 pairs of HDJ-1000, but the mix has to be 25-40 minutes in length :[ if you have a mix or have time to make one, you should go for it :D

Cheers dude, I will do a mix and post it some time soon. It's about time I put one up on the site as part of the tutorials, i.e. to use and only use what we've learnt so far and how to put it into action.

I don't think 7/8 was that bad a transition, you did good considering the differences in the tracks. The issue really lies in the fact that track 8 has a heavier base and it sounded strange when that was brought in purely because of the differences in the entire frequency range. I like the way the transition was happening with a gradual fadeout of 7. But how about, loop the bar on 8 before the main bassline hits and keep looping that for a while, enticing the crowd. Then after a while, add a bit of wild resonance with a HPF filter up high at the end of the bar then get out of the loop to hit the bassline. That way by the time the bassline appears, the crowd are ready for it, they've been awaiting eagerly for it, and the previous track and its strructure have been forgotten. Or alternatively, rather than the HPF, if you have an FX unit go for an echo effect before coming out of the loop and hitting the bassline.

Still a good mix overall though dude, don't be so hard on yourself. You have to start somewhere, and you can't improve unless you have something to improve on.

Thanks for the feedback etch! I've had almost no time for mixing (let alone even listening to anything lately), but I'm gonna mess with that when I get a chance and see what kinda sounds I can get :D
